Stepping On

Are you concerned about falling and preventing injury from a fall? If so, Stepping On is the program for you. Stepping On is a high-level evidenced based program proven to reduce falls and build confidence in older people. A community based small group workshop, Stepping On was developed in Australia and tested in randomized trials with a demonstrated 31% reduction in falls. Dr. Jane Mahoney of UW-Madison brought the program to Wisconsin and with the help of the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging provides this educational experience for our communities.

In Shawano County, this workshop is offered several times each year usually in conjunction with Theda Care in Shawano.

The Stepping On workshop meets for two hours a week for seven weeks.

Topics include:
  • Simple and fun balance and strength training
  • The role vision plays in keeping your balance.
  • How medication can contribute to falls.
  • Ways to stay safe when out and about in your community.
  • What to look for in safe footwear.
  • How to check your home for safety.

If you take this workshop, our past participants indicate you will feel more confident in leaving your home. You will become more aware of potential fall hazards and how to reduce your fall risk. Falling is not a natural part of aging and by actively participating in Stepping On, you will reduce the chances you will experience a life altering fall.
