Crime Prevention

The Shawano County Sheriff's Department is dedicated to the practice and promotion of "Crime Prevention" techniques within our Communities. In crime prevention, we seek to DETER criminal activity, DENY criminal access, DELAY a potential criminal attempt and DETECT a criminal's presence.

The Sheriff's Department offers a variety of programs designed to educate the public, thereby removing some of the opportunities available to the criminal element. These programs include, but are not limited to:

Neighborhood Watch

Security Surveys of Homes and Businesses

Crime Prevention Officers who are available to speak on a variety of topics

The best and only true way to effect the crime rate in our communities is to work together and send a message to those who would take advantage of us that tells them, "Not in our homes. Not in our neighborhoods. Not in our community. Not now, not ever."

Sir Robert Peale, a noted criminologist of the 19th Century, left us with this philosophy, which is as true today as when he spoke it, "The police are the public, the public are the police. The police are only members of the public, who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on EVERY citizen, in the interest of community welfare and existence."
