Healthy Smiles

The Healthy Smiles Program began in 2008 in response to the oral healthcare disparity in Shawano County children.

Our mission is “To improve access to and provide preventative dental care for children of low-income families in Shawano County”.

Healthy Smiles offers school-based oral health education, dental screenings, fluoride varnish treatment, and dental sealants to your child at no cost.

Classroom education is made available to every child. With parental consent, we focus on screening primary teeth, sealant placement on first permanent molars, and fluoride varnish applications on children. Our dental hygienist also provides case management, retention checks, and referral services for high-risk children especially students with severe dental significant decay or those without a dental home.

Shawano County Healthy Smiles (SCHS) offers an evidence-based oral health program to all students in grades K-6 in eligible schools throughout Shawano County.

Stephanie Rice, SCHS Coordinator and Registered Dental Hygienist, oversees program organization and implementation while serving as liaison between dental volunteers and school staff. She works with Dental Assistant, Deb Roy, to provide service to children. As SCHS fiscal agent, Vicki Dantoin, Health Director, provides financial management, strategic planning and grant writing capabilities to assure program sustainability.

We hope that all students will participate, although the program is voluntary. If your child already has dental sealants, we encourage participation so that his/her sealants can be rechecked. The treatment which your child will receive in this program is not meant to be an alternative to regular dental care. It is still strongly recommended that you seek out a dental home (family dentist) for routine dental care, including any follow up care which may be recommended after your child has completed this school based oral health program. No X-rays will be taken.
