Foster Care

Through the Foster Care program, families are licensed to provide a safe environment for children who are in need of protective services and are placed out of their home. These placements are designed to be temporary until the child can safely return to their home if able. As foster parents provide continuing 24-hour care for these children, there are many supports as this ongoing care can be difficult at times. Every child has an ongoing worker through Shawano County Department of Human Services that supports the foster parents as well as the foster child. There is also a Foster Care Coordinator to assist in these supports.

To become foster parents, there are multiple pieces to the application, as well as some home visits conducted by the Foster Care Coordinator. Foster parents also need to provide a physical examination, home owners/renter’s insurance, as well as a background check. The foster home also needs to be compliant with the Wisconsin Building Code. There is a 6 hour training online that needs to be completed within six months of being licensed. Afterwards, there is also a 30 hour in-class training program that needs to be completed within the first two years from being licensed. These trainings are always in the evenings or on Saturday’s so they coordinate will with typical work/school schedules. For more information regarding foster care, please visit the Wisconsin Foster Care and Adoption Resource Center website by going to the following web address http://www.wifostercareandadoption.org/
