Press Release

January 18, 2010

SHAWANO COUNTY ¨C VILLAGE OF GRESHAM

On the morning of January 15, 2009 Shawano County Law Enforcement Officials executed a search warrant in the Village of Gresham. Detectives & Officers from the Shawano County Sheriff¡¯s Office and the Stockbridge/Munsee Police Department were assisted by the State Division of Criminal Investigation and the Shawano County K9 Unit in searching a house after an investigation established probable cause that the residence was being used to manufacture controlled substances.

As a result of the search several items consistent with an elaborate in-door drug manufacturing operation were seized, as were over 167 plants of what is presumed to be marijuana. The plants were being cared for using advanced means to provide light, water, and nutrients.

Additional information gathered at the scene regarding a similar drug manufacturing operation in Green Bay was forwarded to the Brown County Sheriff¡¯s Office¡¯s ¨C Drug Task Force. Brown County authorities were able to act upon this intelligence; executing a similar warrant later in the day.

These cases illustrate the benefits of multi-jurisdictional cooperation and the sharing of resources, as those involved in drug manufacturing and trafficking are mobile, creative, and rarely aware of geographical boundaries.

Press Release

An arrest has been made in Complaints from Gwidt Pharmacy and Hochunk Casino. The Gwidt Pharmacy complaint was a robbery in which drugs were stolen and this was carried out with the use of a device that was said to be bomb. The device was rendered safe and found to contain 2 packs of firecrackers. Prior to the robbery at Gwidt¡¯s Pharmacy a bomb threat was called into the Shawano County Sheriff¡¯s Department that said there was a bomb set to go off at the Hochunk Casino on US 45 just north of the Village of Wittenberg. It is felt that the bomb threat and the robbery were done by the same individual. The bomb threat was called in to keep officers busy while the suspect committed the robbery at the Pharmacy.
On March 15, 2009 The Merrill Police Department arrested a male for a robbery to the Aurora Pharmacy in Merrill, this after the suspect called in bomb threat to the Wal-Mart store in Merrill. The suspect was apprehended in this case and confessed to the crime. Based upon the information provided by the Merrill Police Department, search warrants were obtained for the suspect¡¯s residence in Mosinee and items of evidence were taken and sent to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory in Madison. After the evidence was analyzed at the crime laboratory and the reports forwarded to the Shawano County Sheriff¡¯s Department, there was sufficient evidence to arrest the suspect. Navarino Drug Eradication

October 14, 2009

Navarino Wildlife Area - Town of Navarino - Shawano County

Yesterday at 6:00 a.m. a major marijuana eradication operation was conducted within the Navarino Wildlife Area, in what has been to date one of the largest organized drug grows in Wisconsin The exercise included 78 law enforcement officials from 9 local, state, and federal agencies including: The Shawano County Sheriff¡¯s Office, Clintonville Police Department, the Waupaca & Oconto County Sheriff¡¯s Offices, the Wisconsin State Patrol & Department of Natural Resources, the State of Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Support services were provided by the Shawano County Emergency Government Director & Clintonville Area Ambulance Service.

As a result of the exercise approximately 8,000 marijuana plants were eradicated from 12 separate grow sites. In addition to the removal and destruction of the plants 4 separate camp & work sites were processed for evidence and subsequently dismantled. An evaluation of the crime scene indicates that the criminal operation had been abandoned for some time, and that a substantial amount of marijuana had been harvested prior to law enforcement being alerted to its presence.

The eradication operation is part of an ongoing investigation that stemmed from a citizens tip that provided the coordinates of the area. These sites should be considered hazardous and individuals finding themselves in such surroundings should leave immediately. If anyone has been in the area of the Navarino Wildlife Area this summer or fall and has seen anything abnormal please contact the Shawano County Sheriff¡¯s Office or you local law enforcement agency.

The size, scope, and elaborate nature of these grow sites and encampments are indicative of organized criminal activity, which has been a growing problem in central Wisconsin over the past few years, but which has been seen for sometime in western states. Local, State, and Federal Officials continue to collaborate on addressing this and other similar issues.

On behalf of the Shawano County Sheriff¡¯s Office and this community I wish to offer my thanks to all the individuals who assisted in coordinating and seeing this operation through to completion. This activity remains under investigation with yesterday¡¯s activity being only one portion of a much larger inquiry.

News Release August 8, 2008

The Shawano County Sheriff's Department has recently received several complaints involving money scams. The scam involves a citizen receiving a letter stating that they have won some type of lottery or prize. A check will accompany the letter and is usually in an amount of several thousand dollars. The check will be made for some odd dollar amount and there will be instructions that the recipient is not to cash the check until they contact the sender for further instructions.

The accompanying letter will state that the check is to cover fees; taxes or other out of pocket expenses in order to claim the larger prize that the person has allegedly won. Once the person calls the number they will be given instructions to cash the check and send an amount back to pay for any processing or other fees. They will be told that they may keep the excess and it will be deducted from their total prize winnings. Often times the person will be instructed to send the money back via Western Union or Money Gram.

These are all scams aimed at getting your money. The first thing to remember is that if it sounds too good to be true, it is. It is also hard to win a lottery that you did not buy a ticket for or enter into a drawing for. Once you cash this check and send any money back, your money is gone. This is especially true when using an electronic service such as Western Union or Money Gram. Your money is most likely being sent out of the country and once it is sent, you cannot get it back.

Even though these recent scams have come through the U.S. Mail, there are several email and Internet scams that are very similar. If you receive anything of this nature or are the victim of this type of offense please contact your local law enforcement agency.

Further information on these types of scams can be found at:
