Mission Statement

What do we do in Public Health?

Public health protects and improves the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection, and control of infectious diseases of an entire popoulation.

Public health professionals try to prevent problems from happening or recurring through implementing educational programs, recommending policies, administering services and conducting research. Public health also works to equalize the quality of health and health care for everyone in the community.

Our vision is "Healthy People in Healthy Shawano and Menominee Counties".

Our mission is to "Assure the health of Shawano and Menominee Counties by promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing illness and disability, and protecting communities".

Last year about this time, the Shawano County AODA workgroup sent out a survey regarding alcohol use and binge drinking in our community. Now it is time to conduct our post-campaign survey. This survey will be used with the baseline data to see what impact our awareness campaign had on local knowledge and practices. Using these results, our work-group and community partners will be better able to develop targeted and effective prevention strategies. Please consider completing the survey even if you completed it in the past. It should take only 15 minutes and will be anonymous. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the health department. Thank you once for your participation in making Shawano a healthy place to live, work and play!

The Alcohol Awareness Campaign is now underway! Keep a lookout for signs throughout Shawano County promoting alcohol awareness and education. Did you know that Shawano County's excessive drinking rates are almost three times the national average? It's time to start the conversation about our alcohol use.

Shawano County AODA Discussion Guide
This discussion guide serves as a complement to the sign campaign and offers many questions on our use, perceptions, and traditions around alcohol.
