Mission Statement

What do we do in Public Health?

Public health protects and improves the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection, and control of infectious diseases of an entire popoulation.

Public health professionals try to prevent problems from happening or recurring through implementing educational programs, recommending policies, administering services and conducting research. Public health also works to equalize the quality of health and health care for everyone in the community.

Our vision is "Healthy People in Healthy Shawano and Menominee Counties".

Our mission is to "Assure the health of Shawano and Menominee Counties by promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing illness and disability, and protecting communities".

Are you aware of the Blastomycosis outbreak?

Blastomycosis is a disease caused by the fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. The fungus lives in moist soil and in association with decomposing organic matter such as wood and leaves. Lung infection can occur after a person inhales airborne, microscopic fungal spores from the environment. Officials believe the tubers from the Little Wolf in Waupaca County have gotten sick after going ashore and coming in contact with infected soil. If you or anyone you know has been around the Little Wolf River please be aware of the symptoms and seek medical attention. This disease is not contagious and is treatable with anti-fungal medication.

The Alcohol Awareness Campaign is now underway! Keep a lookout for signs throughout Shawano County promoting alcohol awareness and education. Did you know that Shawano County's excessive drinking rates are almost three times the national average? It's time to start the conversation about our alcohol use.

Shawano County AODA Discussion Guide
This discussion guide serves as a complement to the sign campaign and offers many questions on our use, perceptions, and traditions around alcohol.
